Jennifer Fisher: Get the LookWednesday, Feb 09,2011
Jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher has us swooning over her edgy jewelry designs. From 14kt gold dog tags and personalized charms, to studded cuffs and pave black hearts, she has created something for every woman including celebrity fashionistas and casual moms. MyScoop had the opportunity to ask the jewelry extraordinaire a few questions. Read below for all the details. How did you get started as a designer? I worked as a wardrobe stylist for over 10 years in Los Angeles on numerous television shows, films, and commercials. After I moved to New York with my husband and had my son Shane, I looked around for a piece of jewelry that I felt was special and represented him. All that I could find was jewelry that was mass produced and not unique in any way, so I made my own. A simple yellow gold dog tag with his name stamped on it, that I wore on a long link chain. The rest is history. I had no idea that so many other women were searching for the same thing; something that was not only unique but also that could be personalized. Is designing as fun as it seems it would be? I absolutely LOVE it. Where do you find inspiration? I am inspired by everything and anything. I will find inspiration from a street grate in the city. Seriously, (the grate cuff is proof) I love walking the streets and admiring other women and their sense of style. I also love photography. It is my passion. I have been a collector for over two decades. I really enjoy going to see shows and reading about new photographers. If you could be anywhere in the world where would you be? I would be living on the beach in Malibu with my family. I will always long for the opportunity to raise my family on the beach. (I was raised in Santa Barbara, California) Or maybe on the beach in Mexico. Whenever we take family trips, we tend to head West. Where do you see your company in five years? It is very hard to grow and still maintain integrity. With all of the demands of "Big" business, it is difficult not to fall prey and expand too quickly. I plan to open a flagship location in NYC next fall. Who is your favorite celeb to wear your designs? I really love Naomi Watts. I think she has a great sense of casual personal style. (Especially when she wears my jewelry. Tell us about a typical day for you: I am with my children (Shane is five, Drew is four) every morning. I take them both to school before I head into the showroom. I am usually there designing and meeting with clients for most of the day. My most important job however, is being a "mom" so if I am not going out with clients, I can be found at home cooking for my kids. Time really flies by and before I know it they will be all grown up and heading to college. I really try to spend as much time as possible with them and together as a family Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? The best advice that I can give is to just get yourself out there and not to be afraid to show everyone what you've got! It just takes one person to catch on to your designs. If you don't try, you will never know what could be! As a child did you envision yourself doing something creative? Yes! I was the kid who started a business during the summer (when school was out) and would take my creations around to local stores to try and sell them. I was an entrepreneur at age six. It’s genetic.
